Dear Charles,

A short note of thanks from myself and the construction management students at UTS for taking the time to talk to us about the critically important subject of mental health well being in the construction industry.

You opened our eyes to the enormous damage that toxic workplaces can do to individuals, firms and the industry itself.

Your willingness to engage in an open, honest and sometimes deeply personal conversation about this important issue has made an impression on us all.

Our students are the future leaders of our industry and I have no doubt that your ongoing work will play a major role in changing the culture of our industry for the better, where it needs to be changed.

Kind regards

Martin

The GHFC survey with regard to 'Corporate Culture and its alignment with the mental health well-being of all employees', is an initiative to better understand how the community feels about the issue of endemic anti-social behaviour in the workplace, including Inequality, Discrimination, Bullying, Intimidation and Harassment, in turn resulting in reduced mental health well-being.

Following is a summary of community responses:

  • More than 7 out of 10  (71.6%) of employees acknowledge that anti-social behaviour is endemic in the workplace

  • Almost 8 out of 10 (77.7%) have witnessed or experienced Inequality, Discrimination, Bullying, Intimidation and Harassment in their workplace

  • With  4 out of 10 (38.4%) within the last 12 months!

  • Nearly all (97.3%) support the statement that 'Corporate Culture needs to address anti-social behaviour in line with the duty of care of the business to its employees'

  •  With 85% strongly in support.

  • More than 9 out of every 10 (91.2%), agree that failure to act will see employees relocating to an 'Employer of Choice', being an Organisation which does comply with ISO 45003.

  • 2 out of every 3 (66.7%) agree that it is the responsibility of all Organisations, alongside lawmakers, to ensure that Corporate Culture proactively and strongly takes action to address these anti-social activities!

  • While over 1 in 4 (25.2%) perceive those best placed to fix this anti-social attitude in the workplace are employees 'speaking up and taking affirmative action'

In terms of demographic background, age groups as a % of respondents are as follows:

Age 18 - 24      0%

Age 25 – 34     7%

Age 35 – 44    17%

Age 45 – 54    35.5%

Age 55 – 64    35.5%
